Building Services company Morfitts has recently completed the £780,000 mechanical and electrical design and installation project at The Lighthouse Group’s new, purpose built ‘Centre of Excellence’ in Bradford.

Keen to use sustainable solutions for its energy sources, at the client’s request Morfitts installed a solar heating system which assists in the heating of the hot water services for the building, resulting in considerable savings on its fuel bills. Depending on the external conditions, there will be numerous days when no fossil fuel at all is used to heat up the hot water needed for the building.

John Cundale, Morfitts’ Project Engineer said: “Whilst solar power has been around for quite a while, demand for it and other green solutions on commercial properties is definitely increasing. The system we installed at The Lighthouse Group is becoming more common on the projects we are undertaking. We are at present involved with solar systems on other projects, as well as natural ventilation systems to cool buildings, biomass wood chip boiler installations and ground source heat pumps, which use fuel from a renewable source.”

Morfitts, through its ongoing training and development programme, equips its staff with the skills and knowledge to advise its clients on the best sustainable solutions for their particular requirements.

Steve Fletcher, Divisional Director of Morfitts said: “We believe that the key role of the building services engineer in meeting the ‘sustainability challenge’ is being able to provide high efficiency, low carbon systems, using wherever possible materials and technologies that preserve the planet’s natural resources and safeguard the environment. Morfitts has the technical skills and knowledge in place to help clients achieve this.”

Working with main contractor York House Construction, the £3.6m project was officially opened in May and comprises a purpose built sports hall, a gym, four supported housing units, interview rooms, training rooms, education rooms, music studios and sub-let office space which it hopes will encourage entrepreneurship in the District.

The Lighthouse Group (TLG) helps young people who are at crisis in their education, and the new Centre will act as the focal point for their services within the Bradford district, whilst facilitating operational support to other TLG centres across the country.

Tim Morfin, Chief Executive of TLG said: “The new Centre of Excellence is really exciting. Not only does it display our personal commitment to tackling social breakdown and educational under-achievement, but developing a brown field site and working with Morfitts to develop sustainable solutions for our energy sources, highlights our ambition for social regeneration within communities on numerous levels. The new Centre of Excellence will significantly broaden and enhance education provision and directly impact the lives of hundreds of young people in the greatest need.”
