The Government’s Building Schools for the Future scheme is a £45 billion programme under which every secondary school in the country will be re-built or refurbished by 2020.

However, food expert Prue Leith, who chairs the School Food Trust, is reported as saying recently that schools are still being built with inadequate kitchens, making it impossible to provide pupils with a healthy dinner.

Ledaire Fabrications has been manufacturing kitchen ventilation systems for nearly 80 years and the company’s Managing Director, Steve Leonard, confirms that there is a tremendous backlog of work to be done, estimating around 80% of schools have kitchen ventilation systems that do not meet the British Standard, BS6173:2001.

Steve Leonard recently surveyed 40 schools in one London borough and not one conformed to the British Standard or HVCA DW/172, the standard for kitchen ventilation systems.
