 | | BRITISH ENERGY SIGNS STRATEGIC ALLIANCE WITH AMEC, ATKINS, FRAZER-NASH CONSULTANCY AND SERCO ASSURANCE | | | British Energy | | 01/05/2008 | | | British Energy announces its team of partners in a strategic alliance worth up to £20 million a year over five years to provide engineering and technical support to its nuclear fleet of stations.
AMEC, Atkins, Frazer-Nash Consultancy and Serco Assurance, will work alongside British Energy in the Technical Support Alliance (TSA), while other suppliers will become involved as business needs develop. The contracts may be extended beyond the initial five years.
The TSA is the renewal of a previous arrangement which has already delivered more than £80 million of work and provided British Energy with access to specialist third party technical capability.
While British Energy is responsible for the safe and effective running of the power stations, a support infrastructure is required which includes the TSA work programme. The TSA provides certainty and transparency for all participants.
Within the TSA, each participant has a vested interest in ensuring successful delivery. The more reliable British Energy’s engineering delivery then the greater likelihood of generating more reliably. All partners contribute to the annual TSA business plan and are able to help each other to achieve greater efficiencies.
Malcolm Twist, head of supply chain and outage at British Energy, said: “This is a skilled team that will provide technical support to our fleet of nuclear reactors to ensure they continue to meet the energy needs of the UK. The TSA provides the company with long term access to a highly qualified pool of engineering skills and experience.”
“This is one of the decisive actions British Energy is taking to ensure that we maintain a steady supply of technical expertise. Working together will provide British Energy sustainable support for the lives of the power stations. The level and type of expertise that British Energy requires will vary over time and the TSA is designed to have the flexibility to accommodate this need.”
Mike Saunders, president of AMEC’s nuclear business said: “We are delighted to be a member of the TSA and look forward to continuing our long and successful relationship with British Energy. The continued operation of the BE reactor fleet is of vital importance to the UK and we are proud that the world-leading expertise within AMEC will play a key role in ensuring that these reactors produce energy for years to come.”
Managing director of Atkins’ Energy division, Martin Grant, commented on the new contract. He said: “Having been involved with British Energy for many years, we are excited about the alliance, particularly at a time when the UK’s nuclear industry is of increasing national importance. The contract will give us a platform to further develop our specialist nuclear capability. It confirms our decision to put nuclear firmly at the centre of our strategic plans.”
Steven Grant, power and energy director at Frazer-Nash Consultancy said: “Frazer-Nash has extended its range and depth of support considerably to British Energy over the last three years of the Technical Support Alliance (TSA). We are delighted to continue this support, with our industrial partners, as a Tier 1 supplier. Within our diverse UK and International Nuclear portfolio, British Energy is a key client and we look forward to contributing to its long term supply of safe, clean electricity.”
Chris Theobald, managing director, Serco Assurance said: “Serco Assurance brings a wide range of specialist technical, engineering and safety expertise to support the safe and efficient operation of BE nuclear power stations. In particular, we bring our experience of successfully supporting the Magnox reactor sites over a number of years and our structural integrity testing and analytical capabilities. We look forward to working with partners to ensure the UK continues to benefit from electricity generated by BE stations." | |
