SGB PROTECTS PATIENTS FROM NOISE POLLUTION
SGB Rovacabin
28/09/2006
SGB and Balfour Beatty have jointly demonstrated exceptional levels of social responsibility during the construction of the massive new £559m `Super Hospital' PFI development in Birmingham, which will amalgamate the Queen Elizabeth, Selly Oak and QE Psychiatric hospitals.
Noise on site can be a problem on construction projects especially those surrounded by housing and community facilities such as hospitals.
The solution required at the Birmingham Hospital site was an effective acoustic barrier system. The SGB and Balfour Beatty engineering teams worked closely together in adapting the `SGB Defender' acoustic barrier for this specific purpose, which was refined further by being manufactured in Balfour Beatty's corporate colours.
The standard `Defender' from SGB is a demountable acoustic panel system for site works, based on a modular panel and post system - but the solution developed here is purpose-designed.
This unique system will protect the patients from undue noise and consists of 180 acoustic panels, featuring specially designed fixings which overcame particular windforce difficulties on this long-term project. It is believed that the SGB Defender panel system could reduce noise levels in the region of 10 dB(A).
