TREE ROOT PROTECTION CELLULAR SYSTEM GAINS POPULARITY
Terram Ltd
04/12/2007
With environmentalists concerned for the preservation of woodland and trees to help control climate change, Terram’s cellular system for tree root control is seeing increased usage.
The cellular system allows paths, drives and parking areas to be located within a tree protection zone, so enabling development that might not otherwise be permitted by local authorities.
Tree roots can cover a radius equal to twelve times the trunk diameter and their protection is important for both the anchorage of the tree and correct absorption of oxygen and moisture.
Terram’s cellular system comes into its own here as it is a ‘no-dig’ solution. The cellular matrix is then infilled with a porous granular material to permit the flow of water and air. This surface is then finished with a permeable wearing course such as porous tarmac or block pavers.
As a lightweight polymeric fabric material, Terram cellular system is supplied in easy to transport, flat panel form which is expanded on site to create the honeycomb structure for infilling. The material is fully porous, it does not allow infill to transfer between cells. It also prevents the compaction of soil which restricts air and water to tree roots.
As all applications are different, Terram recommend an horticulturalist advises on tree protection and an engineer recommends details such as cell depth, fill type and load bearing capacity.
