First impressions count, and visitors arriving at Westfield Derby – which offers one of the UK’s largest retail car parking facilities – are offered a warm reception.

More than 60,000 square metres of Flowcrete’s Deckshield have been applied at the development, creating a welcoming, safe and protective surface underfoot.

The project included the installation of 16,000 square metres of the fast track floor system, Deckshield Rapide, on the top deck and access ramps to a new build car park at the site. Flowcrete approved contractor, 4m flooring uk carried out the application project.

Deckshield Rapide is specially designed to cope with the hostile environment of exposed floor areas on top decks, resisting UV damage and maintaining its original colour despite extremes in weather.

Wet weather can also hamper the installation process with traditional decking systems. When the elastomeric layer is put down the next layer has to be applied after 24 hours – a problem if the weather takes a turn during the application – but one avoided with Deckshield Rapide due to its rapid cure times.

In other areas at Westfield Derby, Deckshield Intermediate was installed across two levels within the structure, as well as in the basement of an existing car park, giving a new lease of life under extensive refurbishment works.

Under the package of works, more than 10,000 square metres of Flowcrete’s Isocrete K-Screed and 7,000 square metres of Isopol polymer screed – both heavy-duty systems – were installed, underneath Deckshield.

Isocrete K-Screed was also applied to fourteen flights of stairs, which were then coated with a quartz system.

Alan Dean, sales director of Flowcrete, said: “Working with other features including effective lighting, Deckshield transforms car parks into people-friendly environments - providing a colourful finish that can introduce design features into the floor.

“These can include signage and direction within a car park zone, including line markings, as well as pedestrian areas, disabled access and parking zones - and parent with child spaces.

“The anti-slip surface ensures safety underfoot and also reduces tyre squeal, cutting down on noise in the building.”

Deckshield technology offers structural protection from water and salt ingress, due to its ability to bridge cracks of up to 2.5 millimetres, which can be caused by high traffic density.

Without decking systems, water can enter the concrete, and over time will corrode the reinforcement. This could lead to chunks of concrete working loose and could ultimately lead to the collapse of the entire building.
