INTERESTING PROJECT - CLADDING
Shackerley (Holdings) Group Ltd
29/10/2007
The company has supplied ceramic granite rainscreen cladding for Travelodge's biggest hotel - at No 1 City Road London.
It is the largest budget hotel to be built in the capital in a decade. It has 392 bedrooms.
Architects: Dexter Moren - Rainscreen installers: Baris.
UNUSUAL PROJECT - The hotel encompasses the Grade 2 listed Lowndes House - the neo-baroque styled former HQ of the Singer sewing machine company PLUS a new-build seven story building alongside, built on the site of a dilapidated carpark.
The ceramic granite facades from Shackerley had to 'reflect the rhythm of the historic building...in a contemporary way'. (Because of this design brief, every single one of the 750 x 30mm thick ceramic granite rainscreen panels had to be cut to a bespoke size! They were also prefabricated off-site by Shackerley, with special brackets attached ready for installation (mechanical fix to special horizontal rails designed for large format/heavy panels).
The material was only specified after consultation with Islington Borough Council - with its neutral-coloured natural unpolished finish it was deemed to complement the existing Portland Stone.
