'Lounge plates' that provide four switched socket-outlets together with radio/TV/satellite connection facilities and telephone outlets have been introduced as a standard product in Eaton's MEM wiring accessory range. They offer enhanced socket-outlet provision and avoid a clutter of smaller plates (socket-outlets, radio/TV outlets, telephone outlets etc.) by bringing these services together into a single unit.

'Developers are increasingly calling for special plates that bring these services together into a single accessory so we have produced a `standard' product that meets the most likely requirements' says Frank Sayers, Eaton's Product Manager for wiring accessories.

The new lounge plates comprise two two-gang switched socket-outlets, a telephone outlet, and a 'quad' plate incorporating FM radio, terrestrial and satellite TV outlets and a satellite return connection. A second unit has an additional blank insert alongside the telephone outlet, this can be used for services such as a second telephone outlet or a Satellite Plus connection.

The lounge plates form part of Eaton's ULTRA flat metal plate range and AURA flush plate range. In ULTRA they are available in three finishes - white, stainless steel or highly polished - with white or black inserts. In AURA, stainless steel and highly polished with black or white inserts are offered.

The plates are designed for flush mounting in a standard 24-way grid switch box. This is a 56mm deep metal box with an earth terminal. A metal divider is available for segregation of mains voltage and telecom services.

ULTRA and AURA socket-outlets all have double-pole switching for added safety and twin earth terminals to ensure a more reliable earth continuity path on ring circuits. The 'quad' section is fully screened, with standard IEC coaxial outlets for FM radio and terrestrial television and two F-type outlets, one of which provides the signal from a satellite dish to the set-top satellite box while the other provides for a return signal from the satellite box to additional TV outlets around the home.

While the new lounge plates are offered as a `standard' product, covering the most likely requirements, Eaton can supply other plate arrangements to order. For example, some developments include a 5A socket-outlet for connection to a lighting circuit so that a standard lamp or table lamp can be switched from the main room lighting switch.

In a luxury development in London, Eaton has supplied special lounge plates with four 13A switched socket-outlets, one 5A lighting outlet, FM, TV, satellite and return outlets. Special `kitchen plates' were also supplied. These incorporated two 13A socket-outlets, telephone, TV and radio outlets and, in some cases, a switch for a waste disposal unit.
