High rise pumping made easy with Sika multi functional admixtures

Careful mix design and the use of a multi functional admixture in the production of ready-mix concrete has played a significant role in the construction of the 31 storey, 108 metres high Bridgewater Place Tower, now rising above Leeds city centre.

Close cooperation between ready-mix suppliers Hanson Premix and admixture specialists Sika has enabled structural contractor PC Harrington to pump the concrete upwards from ground level to successive floors, without the need for a pump aid or the use of any other specialist admixture as building progressed on the Bovis Lend Lease project. The special Sika formulation - Sikament 160 - employed by Hanson ensured that the workability of the concrete was maintained to a height of 100 metres above the static permanent pump and after the additional line distances needed to serve three feed stocks strategically positioned for slab pours for each floor. With an average pump-delivery rate of 36 to 42 cubic metres per hour and each floor slab requiring five pours of 175 cubic metres no problems were encountered even across a wide range of seasonal temperature. The largest pour, of 500 cubic metres, was completed in one day in one block.

An alternative multi functional admixture, Sika H170, was used exclusively in the lift shaft blocks again with success until the introduction of the latest new product development. Although multi functional admixtures have been in use worldwide since the eighties Hanson Premix is the first major ready-mix company in the UK to adopt the advanced technology on a national basis. Working with admixture supplier Sika, Hanson Premix is able to adjust mix design and admixture dosage to match the contractor's needs with a single admixture solution and says that the efforts it has made to introduce this practise are now paying off for all concerned.

Designed by Aedas Architects Ltd, the Bridgewater Place office and residential development, is to be the region's tallest building and will house 21,800 square metres of office space in the lower 10 floors and 200 apartments in the upper 20 floors with the lower ground and basement levels devoted to car parking.
